Building Financial Futures: Supporting Students at Discovery Academy
At Hanley Economic Building Society, supporting our local community is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that helping young people develop financial knowledge and confidence is an important investment in their future, which is why we were delighted to launch Building Financial Futures, our financial education programme, at Discovery Academy in Bentilee. https://discovery.alphaacademiestrust.co.uk/
As part of our ongoing community efforts, members of our team recently delivered four one-hour sessions to Year 10 students. Designed to be engaging, interactive and practical, the sessions aimed to provide students with a greater understanding of everyday financial topics while encouraging them to think about the opportunities and challenges they may face in later life.
Throughout the day, we worked with four different classes, combining presentations, discussions and interactive activities to bring financial concepts to life. Topics covered included:
- Mortgages and the journey to homeownership
- The importance of savings and setting financial goals
- Spending money overseas and understanding foreign currency
- Inflation and how it affects everyday costs
- Overdrafts and responsible borrowing
- General money management and financial wellbeing
Alongside financial education, we also incorporated elements of career development, highlighting that there are many different routes to achieving personal and professional goals. We shared insights into the variety of career paths available within financial services and beyond, encouraging students to understand that success can be achieved through different journeys, whether through further education, apprenticeships or workplace experience.
Students actively participated throughout the sessions, asking thoughtful questions and taking part in activities that helped reinforce key learning points. We also gathered feedback from both students and staff, which will help us continue to develop and improve the programme for future schools and sessions.
We believe initiatives such as Building Financial Futures are incredibly important for our local community. Equipping young people with financial knowledge at an early age can help them make informed decisions in the future, while exposing them to different career pathways can broaden their aspirations and confidence as they plan for life after school.
The positive engagement from students at Discovery Academy reinforced the value of the programme, and we hope this is just the beginning. We are excited to continue growing Building Financial Futures and look forward to delivering more sessions across our local communities, helping young people build the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for a successful future.
